Scammers were caught in St. Petersburg: how did they steal accounts and what followed?

Citizen
Citizen Sec,

Employees of the criminal investigation department of St. Petersburg detained two intruders who hacked accounts on the portal of Public Services and issued loans to microfinance organizations. They used a clever scheme: they bought inactive SIM cards and checked whether Public Service accounts were linked to them. If the number was linked to the account, the criminals gained access to the victim's personal data and began to issue loans on various sites.
After the applications were approved, the attackers withdrew money to their accounts, and they managed to steal about 500 thousand rubles. Currently, their involvement in ten crimes has been established, and a criminal case has been opened for each of them.
During the searches, the detainees – a 19-year-old from St. Petersburg and a 20–year-old resident of the Pskov region - were found to have SIM cards, equipment and payment cards. Narcotic substances were also found in one of them. The suspects were placed under house arrest.
To protect yourself from such threats, it is important to monitor the security of your accounts. Use complex passwords, enable two-factor authentication, and regularly check your financial transactions.
