SafeBreach Labs has revealed a new attack called 'Windows Downdate', which allows you to hack Windows 11 by downgrading the version of system components and using old vulnerabilities.


Researcher Alon Leviev discovered that it is possible to violate the security of Windows 11 by manipulating the Windows Update process to downgrade key system components, restoring fixed vulnerabilities.


This attack was first presented in August 2024 at the Black Hat USA 2024 and DEF CON 32 conferences. The researchers have published additional details to improve understanding of this attack.


One of the vulnerabilities that can be exploited is bypassing Driver Signature Enforcement (DSE) using the "ItsNotASecurityBoundary" bug, which allows you to download unsigned drivers. This is due to the use of false immutability of files.


Leviev explains how these vulnerabilities can be exploited in systems with different levels of virtualization-based protection (VBS). He found ways to disable key VBS features such as Credential Guard and HVCI, even with UEFI blocking.


To attack a system without UEFI blocking, an attacker must disable VBS by changing registry settings and downgrade the module ci.dll before the vulnerable version. For systems with UEFI blocking, you need to bypass the file SecureKernel.exe which is difficult to do without physical access to the system.


This possibility of hacking through Windows Update poses a serious threat, as it allows you to download unsigned drivers and hide processes while remaining invisible. The attack may lead to the use of old and fixed vulnerabilities.
